Returning to Water

Returning to Water

I’m almost embarrassed to admit this, but honesty is part of my journey, so here it is: I didn’t drink water the way I should for nearly three years.

Growing up, water was second nature. My mother loved fruits, vegetables, and good old-fashioned H2O. She was even a vegetarian for a while, and in our house, fresh food and water were just part of daily life. Later, we became more of a “meat and potatoes” family, but the habit of drinking water stayed with me.

Until life shifted. After a surgery and a whirlwind of challenges, I stopped treating myself kindly in this one simple way. I still drank tea, protein shakes, even soda sometimes — but not water. Not the thing my body was built to run on.

Then this June, I made a pact with myself: water every day. Maybe not always 64 ounces, but at least a bottle or two. Some days more, some days less, but always water.

The difference has been undeniable. My skin looks clearer and younger. My energy feels cleaner. My body feels like it’s finally exhaling.

It’s funny how we can know something in our minds for years — “drink more water, it’s good for you” — but until we come home to it for ourselves, it doesn’t click. Sometimes wellness is just returning to what we already know.
