Have you ever noticed how humbling travel really is?

I’ll be honest with you — I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I like things a certain way: the bed just right, the shower pressure perfect, the A/C cool enough, food seasoned just so.

But every time I step outside the U.S. and travel abroad, I’m reminded of something: comfort is an illusion. Suddenly, the systems I’m used to aren’t available. The food tastes different. The bathroom feels unfamiliar. Bug control? Let’s just say mosquitoes have no respect for “comfort zones.”

And you know what? It humbles me.

Travel teaches me that my way is not the only way. That sometimes, what feels like “discomfort” is actually an invitation to grow, to shift, and to see life through a different lens. Even airport security, as frustrating as it feels, is about something bigger than me — the greater good.

Here’s the question I keep asking myself: why do we willingly put ourselves through this discomfort when we travel?

The answer is simple: because the beauty on the other side is worth it.

And then I wonder… What if we carried that same lesson into our everyday lives? What if we embraced small daily discomforts — not as annoyances — but as opportunities to expand, to humble ourselves, and to see from a new perspective?

That, to me, is what travel (and life) is all about.

At RaiStone Retreats, this is the kind of reflection we hold space for. Not just trips, but journeys that invite you to stretch, soften, and discover something new about yourself.
